I recently went all in with a full head of extensions and added about 3-4 inches to the length of my hair. I do at least one extension client a day when I’m in the salon but most of my extension work is to either enhance color or add some thickness around the front where our hair is naturally finer. In that case the added maintenance isn’t as drastic as when you do a full head.
The more length you want to add the more extensions you will need. Also if you naturally have a lot of hair like I do you will need to add a lot of extension hair to make it blend and look natural.
I did this tutorial for two reasons. To show you how I dry and smooth out my hair and to show you how much longer it takes. I always want my clients to know what they’re in for when making a big investment. I wouldn’t say hair extensions are necessarily harder to style, just more time consuming.
I prep my hair like I would a typical blow out. Moisture in the ends, volumizer on the top. You want to keep any creams or oils off the bonds or tapes. These products can cause hair extensions to slide out faster.
Notice how I hold on to the top of the hair and start at the bottom to comb out any tangles. You want to be gentle on your extensions to not pull too hard on your real hair. Disclaimer, I sped up the video to break it down quicker so it may look like I’m being rougher on my hair than I actually was.
I rough dry my hair to get rid of moisture and focus on drying the tapes and bonds first. Before my hairline gets to dry I want to tackle it to smooth out my wave and cowlicks.
