How to use Purple Shampoo

Purple shampoo can be confusing. It can be marketed with words like ‘blonding” or “brighter” so us blondes think more more more! Wrong!

Blonde shampoo can be your friend when used properly so let me give you some facts. Purple/violet cancels out yellow aka unwanted gold tones. What does that mean? Purple shampoo deposits cool or ashy tones.  Ever used too much and your hair looks gray?

I mentioned purple cancels yellow so if you are brunette and have orange/brassy tones purple shampoo will not work. You will need to look for a blue shampoo. I only recommend this for brunettes and darker. Blue deposits more ash than purple so you only use it if you see orange.

Over use of purple shampoo can dry out your hair. Purple shampoo is depositing some color, over using it can dry out your hair and cause build up. I recommend once every 2 weeks for my blondes. That being said, a bottle can last you a long time.

Make sure you are using a very moisturizing conditioner. Not because blonde shampoo is bad but if you are using purple shampoo you more than likely have lightened hair which requires hydration. Talk to your stylist or always feel free to ask me. We want you to have healthy, beautiful hair.

Here is my favorite purple shampoo I recommend to clients

Another option is a toning mask if you find purple shampoo too drying for your hair

Happy Styling!
